The Heart Nebula, officially dubbed IC 1805 and visible in the above zoomable view on the right, has a shape reminiscent of a classical heart symbol. Both nebulas shine brightly in the red light of energized hydrogen. Several young open clusters of stars populate the image and are visible above in blue, including the nebula centers.

This glowing nebula gets its nickname from the familiar shape it resembles and is located approximately 7,500 light-years from Earth.

IC 1805/Sh2-190, also known as the Heart Nebula, is a huge Ha rich nebula located ~7,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. A number of other objects are immediately adjacent to IC1805 including the Fish Head Nebula (IC1795) and NGC896, as well as a large area of gas that radiates from the open cluster (Melotte 15) at the core of the Heart Nebula.

IC1805 and IC1848 are large emission nebulae in Cassiopeia that I captured here with narrowband filters, a monochrome camera, and a camera lens with a focal length of 200mm. It was all shot from my light polluted backyard in Newark, DE. Tone mapped following J-P Metsavainio's procedure.

First, the large emission nebula dubbed IC 1805 looks, in whole, like a human heart. The nebula glows brightly in red light emitted by its most prominent element: hydrogen. The red glow and the larger shape are all powered by a small group of stars near the nebula's center.

The IC1805 emission nebula is also cataloged as Sharpless Sh2-190 and known as Heart Nebula or Running Dog Nebula. This part of the sky is quite dense with the interstellar matter, so there is quite a lot of other nebulae around. A bright cloud in the upper right part of the frame is known as Fish Head Nebula (IC1795 and NGC896).

IC 1805 is a huge nebula located 7,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is full of Hydrogen Alpha and overall pretty faint at a magnitude of 18.3. Because of its size, the Heart Nebula is best photographed using a small telescope (480mm or smaller) so that you can fit the entire object in your frame.
